Your medical emergency may involve a trip to the local Emergency Room or an unexpected hospitalization. It could also happen while you are on vacation (in a strange town) or while you're visiting Aunt Betsy at the old family homestead. No matter where it happens, you can be prepared.

Make a List!

For yourself, and each member of the household, make a list of:

current medical issues (such as "diabetes")

current medications

known allergies

physicians (family physician and specialists, if applicable)

prior hospitalizations

prior surgeries

current physical restrictions

family history (if applicable)

Current Medical Issues: The obvious "issues" are diseases, disorders, syndromes, and any other "recognized" medical complaint (such as "migraines"). You should also include "date (age) of onset" for each medical problem. If the list is more than two or three issues, arrange the list in chronological order, according to date (age) of onset.

Current Medications: The hardest thing to "remember" in a time of medical emergency is what medications you are taking, medication strength, and medication dosage. Often, you can remember that you take your heart medication in the morning---but do you remember the brand/generic name of each, the medication strength (usually indicated in "mg" [milligrams] or some other unit measurement), and how many times you take it each day (often indicated as something like "with each meal" on the prescription label). The best way to make the list is to get all of your prescription medication (boxes, bottles, tubes) and put them on the table next to you. Pick up each and transfer the information that is on the label onto your list. Be sure to include: drug name, drug strength, dosage (times per day), and prescribing doctor. You should also include over-the-counter (OTC) medications, including pain relievers, vitamins, herbal and nutritional supplements, and other medications (such as anti-acids). BE HONEST. If you take more than the recommended dose or take untested or non-regulated drugs or supplements, then the doctor will need to know about it (as it may affect the manner in which you need to be treated).

TIP: Keep the printout that you get from the pharmacy for each of your medications. Put the printouts in a file folder. This helps to centralize the information you will need about your medications.

Known Allergies: Even if you take medication for them, be sure to list the
specific allergies that you deal with. Also, if you have "unpleasant reactions"
to eating particular foods (not really an allergy, per se), you should make note
of that as well. During a medical emergency there are many factors that come
into play and giving a treating paramedic and/or physician too much information
is better than not giving them enough information.

Physicians: List names, addresses, and phone numbers for physicians
whom you are seeing on a regular basis (even if "regular" is a once-yearly
physical examination). If you go to clinics for treatments (such as a dialysis
clinic), list that as well. Physicians and other medical facilities may need to
be contacted to get your most current medical records.

TIP: Collect business cards for physicians and clinics. Lay the business cards on a
copier surface and simply copy all of the cards.

Prior Hospitalizations and Surgeries: Unless you are creating a Medical
Emergency List for a child, it generally isn't important to list the fact that
you had a tonsillectomy in 1978. However, you should list all relevant
hospitalizations and surgeries that pertain to an ongoing issue. Provide the
hospital name, city and state, general date (October 2002 is sufficient, or just
the year if that's all you remember), and reason for admission. List the types
of surgeries (by generality such as "back surgery" or specifically such as
"laminectomy" if you have that information).

Current Physical Restrictions: If you are under a physician's order not to lift
more than 5 pounds, or cannot drive because of medications you are taking, make
note of that. If you have physical "limitations" due to arthritis, age, or any
other general health factor, it is wise to note that as well. Remember that
"more information" is always better than "too little information."

Family History: Physicians generally want to know about your own "immediate
family" (grandparents, parents, and siblings): diseases, cause of death, age at
time of death (if or as applicable). If you don't know specifics, then include
what information you do have (even if that information is "all living" or
"unknown").

Keep the Lists Handy!

Create a list for each member of the family (including newborns). If possible, include all of the information on one sheet of paper. Keep these lists in an envelope or folder that is in a readily accessible place. Make sure that all members of the household know where the list is kept (surprisingly, very young children often play a key role in getting emergency care for an older sibling or parent who experiences an at-home emergency). If your 11-year-old son falls out of the top bunk in the middle of the night, all you need to do is grab that envelope or folder on your way out the door. All of the information an emergency physician will need will be at your fingertips because your mind will be on your son...not on remembering his pediatrician's phone number.

Tip: Make 3 copies of each family member's list. At the time of a medical emergency, you can just give the whole page to a paramedic, triage nurse, or ER physician so that it can be included in the patient's chart.

Update the Lists!

When anything changes---a medication is changed, a new physician is seen, or you've just gotten home from the hospital---update the list! If you are pressed for time, then simply make a copy of something (drug printout from the pharmacy, discharge orders from the hospital, new doctor's business card) and clip it to the list. As soon as practicable, formally update the list---and don't forget to make NEW copies and discard the old ones.

Medical emergencies are stressful events. Avoid some of the stress by knowing ahead of time that should an emergency arise, you have all the information a paramedic, nurse, or physician will need to treat the patient promptly and provide the care that is needed.

Jan K., The Proofer is a freelance copyeditor and proofreader. The term ALD can apply to anything from a personal amplification device to an amplified phone. An ALD can be a great addition to a hearing aid or even a great alternative if a hearing aid is not a viable solution. Hearing aids have two main limitations that can be solved by using an ALD: noise and distance.

It can bring distant sounds directly into your ear while eliminating background noise. For those with hearing aids there is a realm of ALDs that are compatible with Telecoil. These allow you and your family with hearing loss the ability to enjoy a variety of activities such as listening to music or talking on their cell phones. The most important fact is that you or your loved one can purchase a comprehensive hearing solution that improves their quality of life.

So, if you think an Assistive Listening Device will enhance your or a loved one's lifestyle, check out Marilyn Electronics extensive line of ALDs!

What is Lewy Body Dementia?

As owner of Marilyn Electronics I am trying to do my part in educating people about Lewy Body Dementia. Learning sign language can provide numerous benefits. Some of these benefits include being able to converse with a person who is deaf or hard-of-hearing. Have you ever meet a deaf person before? If not, the first time you do meet one, just imagine the expression on his or her face when you sign, Hello. Sign language can be learned for people who scuba dive. Having the ability to communicate underwater is priceless. Imagine you and your friend adventuring into a underwater cave. You spot something really cool. You get your friend?s attention, then with the use of sign language, you are able to covey this ?important? message. I am not sure if you have ever tried writing a note underwater, but I can only imagine what the paper would do.

Not only is it cool to be able to converse underwater and converse with deaf people, but you can also make interpreting into a career. Being able to sign gives you an advantage that most people do not have. How many people really know how to sign? My guess is less than 1% of all people know sign language fluently. If you decide to make sign language interpreting a career for you, you would have to enroll in an Interpreter Training Program to help you achieve your goal. While you are deciding to make interpreting a career choice, you can begin learning sign language fluently online, or at a local college. There are several online programs that will give you an upper-hand while learning sign language. You want a program that will provide all of the essential ingredients of ASL. Some of these components include ASL grammar, facial expressions, fingerspelling, numbers, sentence structure, synonyms and linguistics.

Another benefit of learning American Sign Language is the ability to learn about another culture. In the United States alone, there are a plethora of cultures. Deaf culture is one which very few people are familiar with. Have you ever wondered how a deaf person answers the phone? How do deaf individuals know when there is a knock at the door? How do they wake up in the morning for work? Has it ever occurred to you how a deaf person communicates with those who are hearing? For the most part, learning another language also requires you to learn about the culture as well. Deaf culture has a rich heritage, and it reflects tremendous pride. Deaf people function the same way a hearing person would, except with some accommodations made for their inability to hear. Some of these accommodations might include a specialized door knocker, which triggers a flashing light that alerts the deaf person. The same concept might be used to warn of an incoming telephone call. How does a deaf individual ?talk? on the phone if they can?t hear? Well, technology has provided some much needed accommodations that make the lives of deaf citizens much easier compared to what was available in years past. Before the advent of the TTY, deaf people had to drive to the pizzeria to place the food order, then return to the vehicle and wait until the pizza is ready, and then drive home. Thankfully, those inconveniences are a thing of the past.

Now, the newest technical device is a videophone, so even the TTY/TDD is being used less every day. With the use of a videophone, deaf individuals can place telephone calls to anyone by using this new technology. A deaf person merely has to call the relay center where a hearing person is visible to both parties via a television screen. Instead of typing like the TTY/TDD technology requires, the two will communicate only in sign language. The deaf person will provide the interpreter with a telephone number to call. The interpreter places the call to the hearing party. The conversation is then signed to the deaf individual. The interpreter simply signs over the TV screen to the deaf person, and speaks to the hearing person through a headset. Conversations between deaf and hearing are now being done this way all around the world.

Here, I have only listed a few reasons why learning sign language is important. In life, there are so many more reasons why learning this skill is so important; perhaps you have a deaf parent, child, or sibling. Maybe your co-worker is deaf, or perhaps you work at a job where you encounter many deaf customers. Regardless of why you are interested in sign language, there remains no doubt that you can benefit tremendously from knowing this rich and vast language.

American sign language course and learn sign language online at: http://www.asldeafined.com/Free Articles provided by The Free Library

Senior Living

By Geoff Lenox

Everyone is going to be a senior some day in his life. This leads to develop the feeling of dependency on others within themselves. There are various types of senior living options available to the senior people right after the retirement. Senior Living Consultants can help you make a choice according to your tastes and your physical condition.

1. In-home is one of the kind of senior living in which they have been taken care of by their children or by some caregivers while staying in their own homes. To make spoof sites seem legitimate, thieves use the names, logos, graphics and even code of the real company's site. They can even fake the URL that appears in the address field at the top of your browser window and the padlock that appears in the lower right corner.

To make sure you're on our site, type in www.marilynelectronics.com and see if you get to the same place and the web site looks the same. If not then the previous site calling itself Marilyn Electronics was SPOOFED and is FAKE.

They will ask you to send them money by Western Union and you will never receive your products. This company has gone so far as to post a Bogus Better Business Bureau logo on each of their FAKE web sites and link to the Marilyn Electronics profile. We are now working with the Better Business Bureau to get that profile updated appropriately and post a warning so that folks will know immediately that they are on a scam web site.

Again, these are SCAM sites and if you have given any of them any personal information or credit card numbers then you should immediately call your bank, credit card company and pull a credit report as these folks are criminals and are just trying to make you a victim of their scams.

Here is a list of web sites that I have found which are TOTALLY FRAUDULENT and purport to be Marilyn Electronics. This may not be the entire list but what I have seen so far:

1. http :// www. eit-team .com
2. http :// www. electronics-team4you .com/
3. http :// www. electronics-4you .com/
4. http :// www. team-4electronics .com
5. http :// www. team-2electronics .com/
6. http :// www. team-elctronics4you .com/
7. http :// www. team-electonics .com/ ** 03/19/10 New **
8. http:// www. electronics-appliances-world .com ** 03/19/10 New **
9. http:// www. unilux-electronics com ** 03/19/10 New **

If you suspect that you have been brought to one of the sites listed above please type in www.marilynelectronics.com and see if you get to the same web site or products. If you can't find the products from the spoof web site then do not give them any of your personal information.

While on Marilyn Electronics you can also always click on the Control Scan Verified Secure logo on the top of the screen to be sure or on the Volusion Secure Site SSL logo on the left hand side of the page. These logos automatically check to make sure you are on the real legitimate Marilyn Electronics site.

Again, I am very sorry if you have been taken by one of these scummy scam artists. I apologize for the colorful language but we are as much a victim of their illegal activities as you are and it just makes me mad!!!. We have worked very hard day in and day out to grow and build our family business for almost 25 years and to be threatened by these criminals just outrages us.

If you have been scammed by these criminals please post your story as a comment to this post so that others can learn from your bad experience. We hope that if we work together you and I can work to defeat these folks before more people are taken advantage of and make the Internet a better, safe place for all.

Regards,
Michael Peckman
Marilyn Electronics / Rappaport Communications, Inc.

Alzheimers Disease

By Alfred Patrick

Alzheimers disease robs you of intellectual and social abilities and interferes with regular life. About 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimers Disease. The disease usually affects seniors over the age of 65. As the population ages this number is expected to quadruple.

Memory loss is normal. While it might be normal to become a little forgetful as we age, serious memory loss is not normal. Any severe loss of memory, such as that associated with Alzheimers or other forms of dementia, is not normal under any circumstance.

Namenda comes in tablet or liquid form. dosage starts at 5mg once a day, if you don't suffer with any side effects within 2 weeks, it will be upped to 10mg a day. It can then be upped every 2 weeks until you are taking 10mg twice a day.

During the early stages of alzheimers there are people who will be able to cope very well with the disease but as time progresses, the later stages may prove all too much as the severity of the condition takes its toll and sufferers are sometimes not able to do anything for themselves and become bed-ridden.

The most powerful antioxidant is considered to be OPC's, scientifically known as Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins. OPC's are found in the skin and seed of grapes, and also found in pine bark. Traditionally, OPC's found in pine bark are called Pycnogenol and those found in grapes are called OPC's.

The day to day functions of the person will be greatly affected depending on what stage of the disease they are at. You need to learn about the day to day problems that you can expect to face as a caregiver. This information will give you a better understanding of the realistic capabilities of the patient. Take some time to ask how you can help them to keep their independence and a feeling of control.

Alzheimers can be described as the death of the mind before the Body, and as such is a very difficult and depressing condition for any family to have to deal with. Alzheimers is reckoned to be a fatal disease, but the usual cause of death is normally another illness (like pneumonia) which can develop as a complication in an individual already severely weakened by Alzheimers.

If diagnosed with Alzheimers you must accept the fact that it is serious health issue and take proper care of yourself and body. Don't just take a few pills each day prescription drugs or not. Focus on that your brain has a disease and it is progressive so commit time to tackle the problem and if nothing else lets slow the disease.

Senile dementia is the most common and important form of dementia of the Alzheimer type. The incidence of senile dementia increases with age: 0.4% of the population at 70 years, rising to 5.2% at 90 years. It is important to realize Alzheimers does not simply describe a 'normal' pattern of aging and neuropsychological tests can demonstrate this

The major symptom or indication of Alzheimers disease is the loss of one's memory. Most people over 65, seem to get concerned when they with Alzheimers disease at the first signs of forgetting things. Although forgetfulness is an actual sign of the disease, there are other signals associated with the condition.

Read about alzheimers disease.

Free Articles provided by The Free Library

Common Problems for New Hearing Aid Users

Individuals who have some form of hearing loss and have been fitted with a new hearing aid or aids are usually very excited about trying out their new aids. In many cases, however, the fantasy of having their hearing back and the reality of what their hearing aids can and can''t do for them are far apart.

Individuals who have some form of hearing loss and have been fitted with a new hearing aid or aids are usually very excited about trying out their new aids. In many cases, however, the fantasy of having their hearing back and the reality of what their hearing aids can and can''t do for them are far apart. Some new hearing aid users are so disappointed in their results that they stop using their hearing aids altogether; losing their chance to hear and understand the world in a better way.

There are several common problems for first time hearing aid users that can be corrected if handled appropriately:

1. Unrealistic expectations. Many people are fitted for a hearing aid and assume that they will now have perfect hearing and perfect clarity immediately. This isn''t a realistic expectation. There is nothing that can "cure" your hearing or return it to its original and best form. They are called hearing aids because they aid your hearing. If you can hear 70% better, don''t be discouraged because you can''t hear 100% better. You''re still hearing many things you would otherwise be missing; celebrate the improvement.

2. Trying too much too soon. Popping in a hearing aid on the first day and expecting to go to a baseball game or theater means the wearer is doomed to disappointment. The sudden increase in hearing a user experiences with hearing aids will be overwhelming. They first need to try to adjust to how background noises sound in a crowded room or noisy environment.

The brain needs time to relearn how to identify, interpret and differentiate various sounds. An individual with a new hearing aid should not expect the brain to be able to adjust overnight to a change in hearing, particularly if the original hearing loss was gradually over a number of years. Start slowly by using your hearing aids in more intimate environments without a lot of background noise and work your way up. Most people will need between a month and three months to adjust completely to new hearing aids.

3. Too much recruitment. "Recruitment" is a technical term referring to the way some sounds seem over-amplified when someone is wearing a hearing aid. For instance, you may feel like the sound of someone singing is deafening while others find it comfortable. This usually happens because there is a limited range in which a hearing aid can work. The aid has to amplify all sounds, but some don''t need to be amplified as loud as others, and the resulting distortion translates as recruitment. An audiologist may be able to adjust the dynamic range on an individual''s hearing aids in order to minimize this effect. Sound compression technology can also reduce recruitment.

Also, in many cases, it isn''t actually that the sound is too loud; it''s simply that the wearer hasn''t heard particular sounds clearly in years, and they seem louder than they actually are. Many hearing aid wearers discover that this feeling of over-amplification goes away after a few weeks, and footsteps in the hallway no longer sound like a herd of elephants.

4. Neglecting hearing aid features. Anyone with hearing aids that utilize the latest features, such as directional microphones or noise cancellation technology, should be sure they understand how to adjust these features before they leave their audiologist''s office. If they get home and discover they aren''t sure, it''s essential to schedule a follow-up visit. These features can make a huge difference in the performance they get from their hearing aids and neglecting to use these features can result in poor sound quality and lots of frustration that could have been easily avoided.
Our hearing aid website is the best resource for people suffering from hearing loss to get information on hearing aid options, prices and maintenance.

Copyright (c) 2009 Free Online Library

Is It Time for Senior Citizens To Make Money Online?

By pauline munoz

Of course! The need is now more apparent than ever. Let us examine some statistics I researched from SeniorJournal.com.

Aug. 20, 2009 ? New life expectancy tables using data through 2007 were released yesterday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which show the average 65-year-old senior citizen can expect to live to almost 84. And, another new high, shows newborns in the U.S. can expect to live to about 78. Part of the reason for this is the continued drop in the death rate.

Senior Citizen Population on Brink of Explosion in World and in United States: Census Bureau

U.S. seniors may increase by 40% in five years, world senior age group to triple by 2050.

In the U.S., the population 65 and older will more than double by 2050, rising from 39 million today to 89 million.

June 24, 2009 ? The U.S. Census Bureau has released data over several recent days that highlight to staggering boom in the senior citizen population in the world and nation. In the U.S., the senior citizen population appears to be headed to a 40 percent increase in the next five years. The world?s 65-and-older population is projected to triple by mid-century from 516 million in 2009 to 1.53 billion in 2050.

These are just a few of the many reports of the growing population of our elderly in the United States and World. What I read is that more senior citizens are living longer. What I haven?t researched is: WHY? Is it advanced medical technology and care? Or is it because of lack of insurance, senior citizens are changing their lifestyles to a more healthy lifestyle? I don?t know at this writing. It will be a topic of another article because I am interested.

For the point of this article I examine another concern for out senior citizens, namely Poverty.

Feb. 25, 2009 - Nearly half a million elderly living alone in California cannot make ends meet, according to a new policy brief by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and the Insight Center for Community Economic Development. These senior citizens, the report says, lack sufficient income to pay for a minimum level of housing, food, health care, transportation and other basic expenses.

More than 1 million seniors, both living alone and with family members, can't make ends meet, according to recent research. The center's policy brief looks at the most vulnerable group ? seniors living alone.

Again, I ask, Is It Time For Senior Citizens to look to the Internet as a possible, viable way to earn income online?

Poverty rate for people 65 and older in 2007, statistically unchanged from 2006. There were 3.6 million seniors in poverty in 2007, up from 3.4 million in 2006. Source: Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2007

Number of people 65 and older who were in the labor force in 2007, projections indicate that by 2016, the number will reach 10.1 million.

Source: Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2009

When I become a senior citizen I want to be retired and stay retired. I do not want to continue to work in a labor job, packing for major department stores, cleaning office buildings, or any job because my social security and pension is not enough to live on. As the economy dives and prices rise social security and pensions stay the same.

I also do not want to burden my family by having to live with them if I choose not to. No, the plight of the senior citizens becomes bleak.

The next step is utilizing the computer to make Money Online.

Some of the obstacles I hear when I talk to senior citizens about ?the computer?, is: I am too old to learn the computer, I am scared to use the computer or it is too late to learn all that new stuff.

(I worked in a call-center taking orders for a women?s apparel catalog company that target markets to senior citizen women and when I ask for their email address I get commentary such as the above)

Well, there is good news in that department. Without disclosing the company, (it is easy to find) I saw an ad in a major news magazine for seniors, a computer designed just for seniors. It has a larger screen, bigger keys on the keyboard and with an easy green circle that just says, ?GO? to start your Internet access. It also features a continual check for viruses and spam. It is so user friendly that it is completely a plug in and go computer. The hosting is cheaper than any on the market today.

Once you get familiar with your computer it is all about finding the right product to sell. Yes, to make money on line you still need a product. Unless, of course, you have your own product. Many senior citizens have an art or hobby that would sell well on Ebay, or Craigs List that can be utilized to increase your income.

However, you don?t need to have your own product. There are companies that need you to advertise their product and will pay you to market their product. You can find great products through ClickBank that pays well. One of the secrets of choosing a Clickbank product is finding one that not only pays you per sale, but pays you per month from that first sale. It is easy to learn which ones by reading the information Clickbank provides for each product.

Finding a product with video tutorials makes the learning curve much easier.

So, for you Senior Citizens reading this article, you are halfway there. Chances are it is your own computer you are using. You also can navigate the computer already. If you are not a senior citizen you may be reading about this because you have a senior citizen parent or relative that may be interested in learning a new income choice.

To close, I have this snippet of an article to share:

President John F. Kennedy designating May 1963 as Senior Citizens Month, encouraging the nation to pay tribute in some way to older people across the country; now Older Americans Month in May 2009

May 1, 2009 - A meeting with the National Council of Senior Citizens resulted in President John F. Kennedy designating May 1963 as Senior Citizens Month, encouraging the nation to pay tribute in some way to older people across the country. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter?s proclamation changed the name to Older Americans Month, a time to celebrate those 65 and older through ceremonies, events and public recognition.

It is my commitment that come this May, 2010, I will be teaching senior citizens in my neighborhood the in?s and out?s of learning how to earn that extra income online and helping them to achieve true independence. I am very excited about that.

So, my answer to my question is a resounding YES! It is time to start looking online for that extra or total income.

Maverick Money Makers is a private society that will teach you how to build a six-figure a month business on the internet. If you want to make money online, join the society before it's too late. Unfortunately, for those dads with a hearing loss, listening to a television or stereo broadcast may not only be difficult, but downright impossible. When the volume is turned up extremely high, family members and friends may find sharing an evening in front of the television to be unbearable. To solve this problem, Clarity([R]), a division of Plantronics([R]), Inc., announced today the launch of its new wireless TV amplification device, the Clarity Professional([R]) C120[TM] just in time for Father's Day.

Widely anticipated by those in the hearing impaired community, the C120 uses infrared technology to wirelessly transmit sound from a television, stereo or MP3 player to a lightweight amplified headset, enabling users to hear clearly and comfortably without disturbing others in the room. The C120 is available for $20 off the suggested retail price of $189.95 through Marilyn Electronics online at: www.marilynelectronics.com, and is offered with free shipping.

"That 75% of people with a hearing loss, who find watching television difficult, often compensate by turning the television volume up to unsafe levels for those who want to share in the pastime," explained Carsten Trads, president of Clarity. "The C120 will return the enjoyment factor to listening to music or watching television and make both activities comfortable for everyone."

The C120 amplifies incoming sounds up to 50 decibels and uses patented Clarity([R]) Power[TM] technology to make sounds not only louder, but clearer and easier to understand. The C120 is also the only television listening product to offer telephone ring notification through the user's headset. No longer will a hearing impaired individual miss an important call while watching television. It also can be used in movie theaters, public arenas, religious venues, museums and other venues that broadcast infrared signals for the hearing impaired.

Additional features include adjustable volume, tone and balance and two (2) rechargeable batteries, providing up to eight (8) hours total listening time.

For more information on Clarity and its full line of products designed to improve the lives of the hearing impaired, please call 1-800-622-9558 or visit: www.marilynelectronics.com.

Sleeping Problems in the Elderly

By Colleen Redman

Sleeping problems in the elderly may involve a number of factors such as: decreased energy output as a result of retirement, the age of the person, their state of health, and any prescription drugs they may be taking for health problems.

Illness disrupts sleeping patterns in the elderly, and may result in increased awakenings due to physical discomfort, caused by urinary urgency, cramps, angina, chronic obstructive airways disease, and left ventricular failure, these may be some of the many illnesses which cause sleeping problems in the elderly.

An elderly person may become very anxious about a change in their sleeping pattern, however, it will be necessary to thoroughly investigate the problem in order to ascertain if this perceived sleeping problem, causes dysfunction in their waking activities. If the elderly person has a carer, or lives with family then the problem may be easier to assess, for what appears to be a problem may only be a normal change in sleeping pattern for the age.

The most frequently occurring sleeping problem in the elderly is sleep latency, the person may spend some hours in bed before sleep occurs. The elderly person may view this as a problem and request sleeping pills, whereas, all that is needed is to teach them how to reorganize their lives to cope with the changes in sleeping patterns they are experiencing.

Reduced energy output as a result of retirement with an increased opportunity to take naps, either as a result of boredom or just plain exhaustion, may contribute to reduced quality of night-time sleep.

The pressure of a normal working day has been taken away, so the energy output is considerably less, while this may be offered as a possible reason for sleep latency, many others factors may be involved.

There may be much confusion about sleep latency, the difficulty may be exaggerated because the person who experiences it may be convinced that unless they have 8 hours of quality sleep, they will become ill. Sometimes it is difficult to convince an elderly person that they no longer require 8 hours of unbroken sleep, but may be better served by a shorter night time sleep supplemented with day time naps.

So how can sleeping problems in the elderly be resolved? Firstly it is necessary to provide a warm comfortable noise free environment, if this is available then the addition of regular exercise, combined with a healthy diet may be all that is needed to resolve the sleeping problem. However, if the previous measures fail to help, many other modalities are available to help the person .

Reflexology offers a very gentle and effective aid to sleep , and aromatherapy has proven to be very successful to assist relaxation and sleep in the elderly. Both of these modalities have been used in nursing homes and have been found to assist not only sleep, but the general well-being of the patients.

Sleeping problems in the elderly should be thoroughly investigated before any medications are prescribed. Unfortunately this is not always the procedure that is adopted, for often a script is written for what has been described as insomnia by the elderly person, however, such is mostly not the case, but rather it's a normal progression or a resetting of the circadian rhythms as people age which requires education, not medication.

Provided that there is no evidence of disease of the central nervous system, such as dementia, Parkinson's disease, post-traumatic brain damage, and chronic pain, then sleeping problems in the elderly are far better managed conservatively.

Colleen Redman webmaster and publisher of http://www.sleep-problems-nomore.com, a site offering sleep aids and articles showing you how quality sleep, not more sleep improves your energy levels.

Free Articles provided by The Free Library

Home Mobility

By Low Jeremy

Don't be a prisoner in your own home. The Clarity C4230[TM] features a unique ergonomic design with a scooper-shaped sound chamber ear piece - resembling an ice cream scooper - which serves to make telephone conversations louder, clearer and more comfortable for the millions of people who experience hearing or mobility challenges.

"We really took a new approach with the C4230," explained Carsten Trads, president of Clarity. "From the beginning we looked at how we could get the loudest, most comfortable conversations out of a cordless amplified telephone that also interacted in the best way possible with our end users. So we researched the interface, ergonomic factors, and digital sound processing to create a product that truly meets and exceeds our customers' expectations. Interestingly, we discovered that an ice cream scooper provides an interface that is easy to hold and use. And the scooper-shaped design actually creates a fantastic acoustic chamber for our telephone."

Demand for the new C4230 has been building since the announcement of the product's development--already becoming a top-selling item for Clarity, through aggressive pre-ordering by Clarity Authorized Distributors. The C4230 is available for the suggested retail price of $269.95 through Clarity Authorized Distributors and online at: http://www.clarityproducts.com/.

Amplifying incoming sounds up to 50 decibels, the C4230 uses patented Digital Clarity Power([R]) technology to make sounds not only louder, but clearer and easier to understand. Unlucky few are among us with their hearing impaired denied of the most melodious sounds of nature like the chirping of birds and that of the feeble flowing stream. Technology finally came to the rescue of this lot, in the form of hearing aids. Hearing aids are not new to the medical world. They have been in use for several years ever since the device was commercially introduced in the market.

These are devices that amplify the sound made to help the hearing impaired. Various improved varieties of different hearing aids are available in the market. The most common and the oldest are the one that is worn on the body. This is the first generation hearing aids now seldom used. The technology consists of an amplification system that is connected to a mold placed around the ear. The unit is large in size and can be used in severe cases of hearing losses where other units are futile. A newer version of the hearing aid is the one that fits behind the ear.

In this new model the mold is connected to a small case that is placed behind the ear. Such hearing aids are commonly used by children with hearing impairment because of its durability and capability of connecting to the assistive listening devices. One of the modern varieties of the hearing aids is the ITE Aids. These are placed inside the ear and are custom made. This can be used for children once their growing pattern slows down. Other wise if used in growing children though the device may work smoothly the same would have to be changed once it becomes a miss fit inside the ear.

It would be in the interest of the patient to consult a doctor before he chooses a device. The latest trend in the hearing aids is the digital hearing aid. They provide high quality sound with a better listening experience. Conventional analogue hearing aids converts the sound waves into electrical waves and reconvert to produce the accurate sound.

The quality of the sound produced by the analogue varieties is not as accurate as that of the digital hearing aids. The latter make use of exact mathematical formula that helps produce an exact form of the original sound.

One may wonder why some individuals still use analogue hearing aids in spite of the fact that they produce lesser quality sounds ? The answer is quite simple. The analogue hearing Aids are comparatively cheaper than the digital hearing aids. The cost of the former is almost double of the latter.

Though it is a bit more expensive it is advisable to go for a digital hearing aid because of the superior sound quality and a plethora of additional features. They can be custom made to the specific need of the individual and the degree of hearing loss. Further, they are miniature in size and invisible to the eyes.

These hearing aids are technologically superior and produce near real sounds. They are a major help for the millions of hearing impaired.

The author is a regular contributor to Rediscover Hearing where more hearing aid information is available. There's just no way to get around the huge outlay that's involved with purchasing a hearing aid.

Hearing aids can cost anywhere from $300 to over $3000, so just how much are you willing to pay for your hearing?

It is possible to find some great deals on hearing aids, especially on the internet, but you will always have to spend some serious amount of cash, hearing aids are never cheap.

Many people think that hearing aids are unnecessarily expensive, however the manufacture of all hearing aids is very expensive.

You must be joking!
In 2004 a survey concluded that the average cost of the hearing aids is approximately $1800. However this survey considered all hearing aids as being equal.

Normally, the smaller the hearing aid is, the more expensive it is going to cost.

Digital or analog?
Conventional hearing aid models are all analog, these are cheaper to make, and also rely on fewer parts. The new models of hearing aid are digital, there are some major adventages thanks to the digital system.

Digital hearing aids offer more features, but are also much more expensive. They can easily be adjusted for different environments.

Features
Many new hearing aids have some of the following features:

dual microphones

Telecoils

EQ Systems

These systems are great as they make using a hearing aid so much easier. You can use your hearing aid to customize your hearing aid to suit exactly what you need.

All of these features is extra, it costs a little bit more. You may need some of these features, while others you may not need. It's all down to personal preference.

Hearing aids are so expensive that they can prevent people buying their first set, or even upgrading, just because they struggle to spend so much money.

The Good News
It is possible to find some great deals on hearing aids, there is a lot of competition between hearing aid suppliers and so you should be able to bag yourself a bargain. If you shop around you should be able to save at least a little bit of money. We hope to post interesting articles to help keep you informed of new and exciting products and services for individuals with hearing loss. If you have an idea for an article, please don't hesitate to send us an e-mail.

I would like to start off our blog with an article which was originally published by our founder, Marilyn Rappaport, many years ago in a newsletter which her and her husband Sheldon actually hand typed back in the early days. Hope you enjoy it...

From Marilyn's Desk is meant not only for the hearing impaired, but for spouses, relatives and friends of the person with hearing loss.

Here are some tips to make it easier for the hearing impaired person to hear what you're saying:

Stand directly in front of the hearing-impaired person so they may see your face.

If the person with hearing loss has a better ear, sit or stand on that side.

Hold conversations away from background noise as much as possible.

Speak clearly and slowly, not loud. One doesn't have to shout at a hard of hearing person. It only distorts speech.

If the hard of hearing person misunderstands, be patient. Say the sentence another way.
When talking to a hearing-impaired person, don't be chewing gum or puffing on a cigarette.

Talking with a hearing-impaired person does not have to be any different than talking with a normal hearing person, if you are cognizant of their needs.

E-mail us with any questions or comments
